It has been a long time coming, but the Arico family’s dream of reopening “The Riverside Shoppe” has come true late in 2021. After the space became available Frank Arico suggested to his sister Ann Marie and niece, Thea Arico, to bring back what was once a landmark to the Town of Rockaway. Ann Marie and her daughter, Thea became the third and fourth generation to run the restaurant. The history runs deep. Years ago, Grandpa Tony Arico and his daughter, Rose, ran the small grocery store on the railroad side of the building and Tony’s son, Frank and his wife Dorothy (Edwards), ran the luncheonette on the riverside for many years. Karen Graner Profit, a family friend who worked for the Arico's, ran the store after Frank (1983) and Dot (1986) passed away. Karen became an integral part of the Arico family. Once Karen retired in the early ’90’s, the space was rented out to tenants. It was time for the Arico's to take the space back and bring back what wasn’t just a business. Riverside Shoppe was a gathering place for locals to share stories, and enjoy each other’s company, and have a good meal and a hot cup of coffee. That is what Ann Marie and Thea have brought back. Riverside Shoppe has a nostalgic feel that also has modern touches. There are many fixtures that are from the original store. You will find bits of history in the store with pictures and items. Be sure to check them out as they will be changing every few months. It has been wonderful to hear some customers reminisce about how they remember coming in when they were young. The stories of friends and families have been buzzing since the doors have opened. If you have a story to share please send it our way. We didn't open a new store. . . we have reopened an old one. Can’t wait to see you at Riverside Shoppe!!
